Epigastric hernia is the anterior abdominal wall hernia seen in the midline between the navel and the chest. They are usually small. There can be more than one.
Epigastric hernia symptoms
Epigastric hernias usually present with swelling. It is normal to have pain. Since the hernia hole is usually small, the adipose tissue in front of the peritoneum entering it can be confused with subcutaneous soft tissue masses. A burning sensation is another symptom. It can cause pain and burning during exercise, especially during sit-ups. It tends to grow.
How is the diagnosis of epigastric hernia made?
It is usually diagnosed by physical examination. However, ultrasound is necessary both to distinguish it from subcutaneous soft tissue masses and not to miss other hernias that may be in the same line. Ultrasound is an inexpensive, practical and rapid diagnostic method. Rarely, a computed tomography (CT) examination is required.
Epigastric hernia treatment
The only treatment option is surgery. Since the hernia is usually small, the open method is preferred. The hernia hole is repaired by entering through a small incision. For holes smaller than 1 cm, only seam repair may be sufficient. If a patch is to be placed, it is appropriate to place it behind the muscle or in front of the peritoneum. If the hernia hole is large and the patient is overweight, or if there is more than one hernia, it would be correct to approach it with the laparoscopic method.
