Most hernia patients become aware of a hernia without consulting a doctor. Especially in the groin or belly, painful and painless swellings that can disappear with pressure and sometimes do not go away, can be a hernia!

75% of hernias occur in the groin. The musculature in our groin area is relatively weak. Inguinal hernia is more common in some connective tissue diseases, smokers and underweight people. Hernia cannot be prevented.

However, hernias in surgical incisions called incisional hernias occur for various reasons.

Most hernias are diagnosed when the patient notices the swelling. The diagnosis can be made in 95% of cases with a physical examination by a surgeon. In some cases, ultrasound or even Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) may be required in the groin if necessary.

In the anterior abdominal wall, it may be necessary to go for further diagnosis with ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) unlike the groin. CT and MRI provide very useful information in determining the surgical method in some cases.

The only treatment method for all hernias is surgery.

If your hernia is small and does not cause complaints, you do not need to have surgery right away. However, most hernias inevitably grow over time and begin to cause complaints, especially pain. Rarely, hernia strangulations that require emergency surgery can be encountered. Early and planned surgery is the best option to avoid this risk.

The only treatment for inguinal and abdominal wall hernias is surgery!

Hernias grow over time and cause pain. They impair the quality of life. There is a risk of strangulation of organs, such as the intestine, that go into it. Particularly, complicated large hernias of the abdominal wall adversely affect respiration and quality of life, and the patient's ability to move.

Anyone can have a hernia. However, hernia affects men more.
